The “Female Leaders in Security and Defence: Results and Next Steps” International Conference

During the 09-12 December, 2024, the “Female Leaders in Security and Defence: Results and Next Steps” International Conference took place in Belgrade, the Republic of Serbia, as the Lead Nation for the FLSD Project for 2024-2025, in the framework of the SEDM Initiative, highlighting overall the essential role of women in the defence and security area.

The FLSD conference was opened by the Serbian Minister of Defence H.E. Bratislav Gašić, encouraging all to continue sharing experiences and lessons learned in implementing the gender mechanisms, consolidating our regional cooperation. In anticipation of celebrating the 25th anniversary since the adoption of UNSCR 1325 – Women, Peace and Security, the panelists from academic, policy making and operational areas, have provided, among other important topics, an overview on the gender sensitive policies in human resources management, the role of women in multinational operations, but also the role of gender-responsible leadership in achieving zero tolerance for gender-based discrimination.

During the FLSD Conference the discussions were conducted during the six panels, covering the next subjects and topics:

Panel IIn anticipation of the anniversary – 25 years since the adoption of UNSCR – Women, Peace and Security;

Panel IIThe importance of career development for increased representation of women in uniform in leadership positions in the security sector;

Panel IIIFemale leaders in peacekeeping and peacebuilding missions – challenges and lessons learned;

Panel IVThe role of gender-responsible leadership in achieving zero tolerance for gender-based discrimination;

Panel VThe responsibility of educational institutions in creating leaders for the 21st century;

Panel VIPerspectives of female leadership – leadership practices and development of resilience; barriers and opportunities for female leaders.

Esteemed panelists and participants from the Republic of Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Hellenic Republic, Italian Republic, Republic of Moldova, Montenegro, Republic of North Macedonia, Romania, as well as respected representatives from SEDM Secretariat and SEEBRIG provided immeasurable contribution to the success of the FLSD Conference.

Republic of Serbia holds the chairmanship of the FLSD Project for 2024 and 2025, a milestone period when 25 years since the adoption of the UNSCR 1325 – Women, Peace and Security is celebrated.
